Overview: Benzaldehyde, also known as benzoin aldehyde, is an organic compound formed after the hydrogen of benzene is replaced by an aldehyde group. Benzaldehyde is the simplest and most commonly used aromatic aldehyde in industry. It is a colorless liquid at room temperature with a characteristic almond odour. Benzaldehyde is a compound formed by directly linking aldehyde groups to phenyl groups. It was once called bitter almond oil because of its fragrance similar to bitter almonds. Benzaldehyde widely exists in the plant kingdom, especially in Rosaceae plants, and mainly exists in the stem bark, leaves or seeds of plants in the form of glycosides, such as amygdalin in bitter almonds, cherries, laurel leaves, and peach pits. Benzaldehyde occurs naturally in essential oils such as bitter almond oil, ageratum oil, hyacinth oil, and ylang ylang oil.

Uses: Benzaldehyde is an important raw material for medicine, dye, fragrance and resin industry, and can also be used as solvent, plasticizer and low-temperature lubricant. In the flavor industry, it is mainly used to prepare food flavors, and a small amount is used in daily chemical flavors and tobacco flavors. Although widely used as a commercial food flavoring and industrial solvent, benzyl alcohol's primary use is in the synthesis of a variety of other compounds ranging from pharmaceuticals to plastic additives. Benzyl alcohol is also an important intermediate product in the production of perfumes, fragrances and the synthesis of certain aniline dyes.
