Structure: Taurine is a derivative of cysteine (an amino acid that contains a sulfhydryl group). Taurine is one of the few well-known natural sulfonic acids. In the strict sense, it is not an amino acid because it lacks a carboxyl group. But it does contain a sulfonic acid group and is called sulfamic acid, which is also commonly referred to as a member of the amino acid group in the scientific literature.

Small polypeptides have been identified which contain taurine, but to date no aminoacyl transfer ribonucleic acid synthetase has been identified that specifically recognizes taurine and is able to incorporate it into the transfer ribonucleic acid.

Role: Taurine plays an important role in maintaining brain function and development. Taurine can accelerate the proliferation of neurons and prolong the action. At the same time, it is also conducive to the movement of cells in the brain and the growth of nerve axons. In addition, taurine is also important in maintaining the potential balance of the cell membrane. Because it can help electrolytes such as potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium move in and out of cells, thereby strengthening the function of the brain.

Because taurine has the effect of depressing nerves, it also has the characteristics of antispasmodic and reducing anxiety. In the brain, if glutamate is present in high concentrations, neurons die from overstimulation. Taurine can help reduce the concentration of glutamic acid in the brain, thus protecting the brain. In addition, because taurine also has antioxidant properties, it can also protect the brain from oxidative damage.
