Overview: Biphenyl, also known as phenylbenzene and biphenyl, is a compound formed by connecting two phenyl groups. The pure product is white or colorless to light yellow flaky crystals, while the industrial product is slightly yellow and has a special fragrance. . It is often used as a precursor for organic synthesis and is one of the main components of organic high-temperature heat carriers. Natural biphenyl exists in coal tar, crude oil and natural gas, and the mass fraction in coal tar is 0.20%-0.40%. The current preparation methods of biphenyl include coal tar extraction and chemical synthesis.

Uses: Biphenyl is an important organic raw material, which is widely used in medicine, pesticides, dyes, liquid crystal materials and other fields. It can be used to synthesize plasticizers and preservatives, and can also be used to make fuels, engineering plastics and high-energy fuels. Biphenyl is also used as a dyeing carrier, and its derivatives ethylbiphenyl, diethylbiphenyl, and triethylbiphenyl can be used as high-grade solvents for dye solvents for pressure-sensitive copying paper. The p-phenylphenol derived from biphenyl is also mainly used in the manufacture of resins, as a microcapsule material for color developers and color couplers in the production of pressure-sensitive copy paper, and can also be used in the manufacture of special coatings. Biphenyl can be used as an impregnating agent for citrus wrapping paper and as a treatment agent for certain diseases of citrus plants. Chlorinated biphenyls are plasticizers for chlorinated rubber and vinyl polymers.
